A variety of leadership experience with direct, meaningful impact…
From technical project management to high level guidance of an organization, I have experience across a wide range of positions with different applications.
Duke AERO
High-power rocketry, accessible at the collegiate level…
As the premiere high-power rocketry group on campus, we provide students with the resources to build and fly a competition rocket in the Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico each June. In addition, the club aims to promote a safe environment for students interested in aerospace and engineering to learn and bring their passions to real projects.
President and Lead Engineer (23-24)
In this role, I am in charge of the design, manufacturing, and general operations for the club’s yearly activities. From developing the high level goals and timelines to running day-to-day operations and engineering, I lead a team of over 60 active members through the rocket development process from start to finish. As a relatively young club (founded in 2018), we are incredibly proud of the progress made so far and hope to continue the rapid technical advancement that has occured in the last few years. For the 2024 competition, I hope to bring our team back to the 10,000 ft. apogee category, now with our own in-house motors, for an even more successful flight!
My Goals and Ideas for this year:
Introduce student-developed propulsion technology for the first time in club history; solid and liquid teams have already begun work for the upcoming year
Accelerate the design and prototying timeline to allow for more in-depth testing
Transform club mentorship through the development of a new Rocketry 101 program, teaching fundamentals through smaller model rockets
Continue my previous work advancing the electronic systems on-board, including more data collection
Create a living document for club leadership to pass down and assist in knowledge transfer from year to year
Avionics Team Lead (22-23)
The avionics team is responsible for all electonic and mechanical systems controling flight, separation, and data collection. As team lead, I managed the design and integration of these systems with the other subteams on the rocket, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary communication. Leading this team of incredibly capable engineers taught me about project management, the importance of diverse skill sets, and embracing the strengths of each member.
What we accomplished:
Initiated the desing and implementation of an airbrake system for altitude control for the first time in club history
Created and programmed a custom flight computer with a variety of sensors for the first time as a club
Incorporated an advanced control system based on live data and preflight simulations to control the airbrakes
Designed a physical avionics bay within the rocket to efficiently house all components and emphasize wire control
Rotaract Club of Duke University
Treasurer (2022-24)
During my first year as treasurer, I spent time leading the fundraising efforts and managing the accounting books for our club. As the collegiate affiliate of Rotarty International, Rotaract Clubs provide opportunities for students to serve their local and international communnities with likeminded individuals who hope to continue their passion for service throughout the rest of their professional lives. Some of the fundraising events that I worked on included restaurant partnerships, bake sales, Duke athletic event partnerships, and more. Through these efforts our club was able to complete a number of service projects throughout the year, and I was re-elected to serve another term.
Director of Professional Development (2021-22)
Rotary and Rotaract prides itself on its professional development in addition to its primary focus on service. In this role, I organized 2 career development events with upwards of 40 attendees each. One event brought in local Rotary members from many different industries to provide Duke students with networking opportunities and the ability to ask questions about different career paths. The other event focused on the intersection of career and service, especially the opportunities that people have had to pursue their passion for service while holding a full-time job. Beyond these events, I compiled university resources for career development into a usable place for student use, introduced networking/resume workshops, and provided public speaker training and practice for club members.
Other Leadership Opportunities
-
Since my freshman year, I have used my love of public speaking in the church setting, serving as a lector for Sunday services and other church events. I have also provided training to new lectors on best practices to use when speaking to large audiences. The Catholic Center has also given me the opportunity to lead small groups since my sophomore year. As a small group leader, I develop cirriculum based on scripture for the group to discuss in person. These small faith-based activities provide opportunities for students to take ownership of their faith in a college environment.
-
As the elected president of my high school student council, I worked to implement a lunch program feedback system, anti-bullying instruction for underclassmen, and new activities to promote community and school spirit among the student body. Other responsibilities included speaking to the Board of Trustees, facilitating student-administration discussion, and meeting with new administrative hires.
